3 Easy Ways to Remove Hair Product Build-Up

Ever notice that your hair has become dull and heavy, even though you’re sticking to your usual hair routine?  Product building up is the likely culprit!

Products, including shampoos and conditioners, leave films and residues that weigh hair down and cover up your hair’s luster and color.  Product build up can also suffocate and dehydrate hair. Therefore, removing product build up, and taking pro-active steps to reduce it as much as possible, is a must for healthy hair care.

So ladies, read on to learn how to manage the inevitable gunk. We’ve got 3 solutions ranging from salon-bought to your own fridge!

Apple Cider Vinegar or Baking Soda

Using apple cider vinegar or baking soda are two great home remedies for removing product build up.  However, make sure you rinse thoroughly, otherwise you are going to smell like the kitchen!

Here are the formulas for mixing and using the cleansing rinses:

Apple Cider Vinegar: 2 cups of warm water, ¼ cup vinegar use in place of shampoo, scrub scalp, finish with a cold rinse to close up cuticles.

Baking Soda: 2 cups warm water, ½ cup soda.  Mix until the soda is completely dissolved; it should be smooth as opposed to gritty.  Scrub scalp and hair, then rinse thoroughly.  Again, conclude with a cold rinse to close up cuticles.

Clarifying Shampoo

Once a month, make sure to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos are more acidic than others; so do not use it regularly.  Plus, using a clarifying shampoo once a month will make your regular shampoo work better!

If your hair has been colored, make sure to get one that promises to protect treated locks, otherwise it may strip away some of the color.  Try Kenra’s Clarifying Shampoo for squeaky clean, brighter, healthier hair.

Beer (and Lemons for Blondes!)

Yes, you read that correctly.  Our favorite tailgating beverage can also be used to clarify our hair – score!  Since beer won’t actually cleanse your hair, lightly shampoo first, then work a serving of beer through for shinier, lighter locks.  If you have light hair, take a lemon, squeeze it out, mix it with about a cup of cold water, and run it through your hair. The acidity will cut through soap residue and make your light hair brighter!  Make sure to rinse thoroughly and with cold water.

In order to reduce the amount of product in your hair, make sure to only use the recommended amount of product, and to choose the right products for your hair type.
