The 411 on Keratin Treatments

Keratin Treatments

A lot of people are singing the praises of the Brazilian Blowout or Keratin Treatment for cutting blow dry time in half and smoothing even the frizziest of hair. I was born with stick straight hair so I don’t have this problem but for those of you out there who are searching for ways to get smooth hair and cut drying time in half, I’ve got the 411 on Keratin treatments.

The 411 on Keratin Treatments

What is Keratin?

Also known as Brazilian hair treatments, keratin hair treatments are a semi-permanent, hair-smoothing, curl-softening professional chemical treatment. They make hair straighter, shinier and even healthier. The treatments are usually made up of the chemical formaldehyde, conditioners, and some keratin. Keratin is a super strong protein that is a major player in skin, hair and nails.

411 on the treatment:

Keratin treatments take the Keratin protein that is naturally found in you hair and locks it in place with formaldehyde and is then sealed with the heat of a straightener. Keratin treatments will last 2 – 2.5 months. I suggest going to a reputable salon that is known for excelling at the quality and outcome for these treatments. You can also check out some reviews here.

Once you receive the Keratin treatment you should allow 2-3 days of no shampooing because it needs time to full saturate your hair (kind of like a perm, remember those?). When you can shampoo, use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner Deva Curl. The average cost of a treatment is $300 but varies based on the length and thickness of your hair.

What’s the controversy around Keratin Treatments?

In doing some research on this, it sounds like there is a little controversy concerning the use of formaldehyde (you know, the same thing use to preserve dead bodies). It hasn’t been approved by FDA for use in beauty products. Talk to your stylist about a safe application to help reduce the risks. Also, use them infrequently as a treat to yourself!

Should you get a Keratin treatment?

Like I said earlier, it’s up to you and your stylist. If your hair is a curly frizzy mess or if you just want to experience straight hair for a few months I definitely think it’s something worth looking into. Supposedly famous stars like Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Nicole Richie have had Brazilian Blowout treatments.

What do I like?

It’s a 10 Miracle Shampoo & Conditioner plus Keratin – It may take a few uses, but within a week you should see a difference. Hair will become more relaxed, less frizzy, and more manageable.

I won’t be going to get a Keratin treatment anytime soon (naturally straight!), but what about you? Have you had one before? If so, tell us where and what you thought!
